Lunch at Tupelo Honey – Our First Day Exploring Knoxville and Market Square

One of the funnest things for us right now is exploring our new backyard. We learned after deciding to leave Florida that you shouldn’t take your back yard for granted. As we were leaving, we realized we had left so many things for “another day” that never really came around. So with our new hometown in East Tennessee, we’ve made it our goal to try something new every weekend. We have so many people coming to visit us in the next couple months that we also want to make sure we have something for everyone.

Our first adventure in Knoxville (besides the airport) was surprising! I think we both expected Knoxville to be somewhere between Tallanasty and small-town-America. You can imagine my surprise (and excitement) when I realized Knoxville is a closer to me Asheville like place. We stopped by the Visit Knoxville office and ventured on to Market Square.

Tim and I had lunch at Tupelo Honey, an amazing restaurant based out of Asheville, NC. Tupelo Honey is a revival of Southern, much like Knoxville, rooted in the Mountains it calls home. Southern spirit is infused into every sip and dish, creating a environment where you come together with those you love… not wanting to leave the table. One of the coolest things about Tupelo Honey is that they have a deep appreciation for the ingredients that go into their cuisine and the farmers who bring them from farm to table.

Responsibly sourced ingredients are the foundation of every dish. From ethically raised meats to fruits and vegetables pulled and picked with the earth in mind, we’re committed to the best of every season.

There is no going wrong when it comes to ordering, everything on the menu sounds delicious. Grits dance with shrimp across your plate, sweet tea is used to brine a half bird served with two sides, and sautéed quinoa is paired with buttery leeks and blistered cherry tomatoes.

What we had:

  • Grateful “Veg” Burger – A scratch-made black bean burger, roasted red onion, arugula, Meyer lemon aioli, served with fries
  • Wicked Chicken Sandwich – Spicy honey friend chicken, corn jalapeño slaw, pickles, served with fries
  • Lavender-Limeade Fizz
  • Counter Culture Coffee
  • Honeysuckle & Lavender Flip – Cathead honeysuckle vodka, house-made lavender sour, fresh lemon, soda water
  • Buttermilk Fried Chicken Salad – Romaine lettuce, cucumbers, grape tomatoes, blue cheese, bacon, garlic buttermilk ranch
